The Bohemia Ragtime Society was founded on December 6, 1990, the 103rd anniversary of the birth of classic ragtime composer Joseph F. Lamb (1887-1960), in whose honor our society was named. Both the society's name, "Bohemia," and that of our outstanding newsletter, "The Top Liner Rag," are derived from the titles of two Joseph Lamb rags.
Ragtime, America's first original music, is a unique phenomenon which appeared in the 1890's. The Bohemia Ragtime Society has as its purpose the preservation and encouragement of ragtime. We seek to provide all ragtime enthusiasts with suitable forums for the study, performance, and enjoyment of ragtime music in all its forms. We applaud and encourage ragtime symposia, concerts, and festivals.
From its inception, with Max Morath and Patricia Lamb Conn (daughter of Joseph Lamb) among other charter members, our membership has grown to include members throughout the United States, Canada, Great Britain, Ireland, Norway, Sweden, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Greece, and Australia, making the Bohemia Ragtime Society a truly international ragtime society.
Though currently inactive, the Bohemia Ragtime Society still exists (at least in the mind of its founder) and may be resurrected one of these days.
